Media Release - 2nd August 2007, by Steven ByeA caring heart and a listening ear is all that's needed to become part of TLC Volunteers Maitland. The non-profit organisation is searching for men and women to participate in its next Palliative Care education course, which starts at Rutherford Technology High School on Wednesday. The free seven week program will teach prospective volunteers the skills needed to provide home respite, hospital visits, bereavement support and transport assistance to clients Chris O'Connor completed the course 12-months ago and enjoys being able to help others in need. "I lost my husband, so I've been on the receiving end and TLC were wonderful to me and I wanted to give something back to them," she said. "Sometimes a carer doesn't have anyone to rely on, so we stay with the patient while they get some of the essentials done. And TLC volunteers aren't just there to assist with the terminally ill, but to provide care to anyone who may need it." The course will introduce volunteers to palliative care and cover topics including grief, loss, death, self care, culture, patient contact and communication and listening skills. Using a "buddy system" volunteers are called on to provide emotional, practical and spiritual support to the client and their carer through companionship, reading books, assisting at mealtime or making a cup of tea. TLC volunteers also provide free respite care, allowing the carer to take time out for themselves. "It gives you a good feeling to know you're helping someone who really needs it," Mrs O'Conner said. Anyone with a life-limiting illness or is caring for someone can access the TLC services. The course starts on August 1 from 10am to 3pm and will wrap up on August 30.
